Contract period

In 2014, I got my salary regularized because we had been regularized as employees in 2009 when Shehbaz Sharif was the Chief Minister. Before that, we were working on a contract basis. A group of our teachers filed a case demanding that our service should be counted from the date of joining. The case went on in various courts but no clear result came out. Therefore, in 2014, I decided to convert my salary into a regular employee’s pay scale. As a result, the salary became very low because contract employees used to receive a 30% special allowance which was discontinued, and the salary was also fixed from the first stage of the basic pay scale.

How i started marking

Keeping these conditions in mind, I started thinking about alternative sources of income. Immediately, I decided to participate in board paper marking. Before that, many of my colleagues had suggested that I join them in marking, but I never paid much attention. At that time, my colleague was Tanveer Ahmad — I gathered information from him and went to the board office, where I got a letter for sub-examiner ID. Then I reached the Comprehensive School, where the marking of Chemistry and Biology papers was in progress. I met the Head Examiner, showed my letter, and introduced myself. He happened to know me, so he gave me one packet of 10th class Chemistry papers. I first checked the MCQs, then the short questions, and finally the subjective (long) questions. On the third day, I returned the packet to the Head Examiner.

In the beginning, my speed was very slow because I was reading and marking every paper carefully. Some fellow teachers started joking about my slow pace. I was surprised to see that some teachers, called “machines”, could check a whole packet of papers in 45 minutes to one hour, and they could mark 200–300 papers in a single day. In those days, the rate for checking one paper was 30 rupees. In the beginning, I used to mark about 18 to 20 papers per day, so my daily earning was around 600 rupees. You can easily imagine how much those teachers earned who checked a full bundle of papers in one day.

One bundle contained 5 to 6 packets, and each packet had around 50 papers. When I first started marking, each sub-examiner was allotted only one packet at a time. However, in the next term, the board changed the rule and began allotting an entire bundle to each sub-examiner.

But even this system brought new problems — the fast checkers (those who checked papers very quickly) would grab more bundles, while the rest of the examiners had to be content with only one or two bundles. I noticed that some teachers had involved certain Class IV employees (school support staff) in their work. These staff members used to fill the award lists and bubble sheets for the papers checked by those teachers, and in return, the teachers paid them a small amount. In this way, those employees also made some extra money and, as a result, they began to protect the interests of those sub-examiners — even helping them get more bundles allotted.

Despite these conditions, I somehow continued my work and focused on improving my speed and accuracy. By 2018, my speed had increased to 40–55 papers per day, but I never abandoned my habit of reading each paper carefully before marking. This earned me respect among my colleagues, and during all those years, I was never called by the board for any mistake.

I had the opportunity to work with many head examiners, and none of them ever pointed out a mistake in my work. Mr. Zulfiqar Gujjar, our head examiner for Chemistry, was known for detecting every small error — yet, he never found one in my papers. He trusted me deeply and had great confidence in my marking.

During this period, I often thought that I was not fit for this system. Instead of criticizing it, I felt it would be better to quietly leave. I always feared that some small error from my side might harm a student’s result, so I developed the habit of rechecking those papers that had more than 50 marks just to be sure.

This patience-testing phase finally came to an end when COVID-19 struck. By that time, I had already become inactive and had almost left paper marking. After the pandemic began, the process completely stopped, and by then my financial condition had also stabilized.

Another major reason was that our school had new science teachers by 2018. They began teaching Biology and Chemistry, and I was assigned easier subjects such as Urdu and General Science. According to the board’s rule, a person who marks papers must be teaching the same subjects at school. Although many people ignored this rule and continued marking different subjects, my conscience did not allow me to do the same.

Watch My Ghazal Shour e ishq to sehra hai

This request is directed to the divine, indicating the importance and sacredness of the beloved in the speaker's life. poem Tees "Invisible pain" refers to the experience of discomfort, distress, or suffering that is not immediately apparent or visible to others. Unlike physical injuries or external wounds, this type of pain is often internal, emotional, or psychological in nature. Individuals experiencing invisible pain may be grappling with conditions such as chronic illnesses, mental health disorders, or psychosomatic symptoms that manifest without obvious external signs. This term highlights the subjective and often hidden nature of certain types of distress that individuals endure. Despite the absence of visible indicators, invisible pain can be just as debilitating and impactful on a person's well-being. Understanding and acknowledging invisible pain is crucial for fostering empathy, support, and appropriate interventions for those dealing with conditions that may not be readily apparent to the outside world.
